In the fast lane with Dakota
Dakota (real name Sophie Elton) has had a pretty epic start to the year to say the least! Although she’s a very talented singer/song writer in her own right, it was a chance encounter with Jonas Blue that really kicked things off for her musical rise to superstardom. As she walks into the studio where our shoot is taking place, it’s hard to believe a girl so warm and friendly has a singing voice so strong and seasoned – but that’s what makes her unique. Read on to find out how this year’s success came about, and what Dakota does to stay fit and healthy. WARNING: hotness alert!
The last few months have been a total whirlwind for you – did you ever expect the success or recognition that Fast Car has received?
Yeah it’s been pretty crazy, I don’t think it’s quite sunk in yet. I think we knew we had something special with the track but I don’t think anyone had any idea just how much it would take off, the response has been amazing.
How did the whole collaboration with Jonas Blue come about?
I was doing a gig in a pub in East London, and unbeknown to me Jonas and his manager had heard me from upstairs and had come down to have a listen. They came up to me after the show and told me about this track they had, I loved the idea and I was literally in the studio with Jonas the next day!
What inspired you to cover a Tracy Chapman track?
Jonas had the idea and had been working on the track for a couple of years before meeting me, but had never found the voice he was looking for. It’s obviously such an iconic song so the chance to work with him on it was great.
You’ve worked as a model previously so you’re an absolute natural in front of the camera. Has your modelling experience helped you with your performing on stage and do they have different challenges?
Music is my first love and was always what I wanted to do, so modelling was extra work and a way to help me achieve that, though it was still an amazing experience. They definitely have similar attributes; you have to be very thick skinned in music too, and it helped me to have more confidence in just going for things I didn’t think I could do.
What tips do you have for staying fit and healthy with such a hectic schedule?
It’s definitely harder to keep fit and to have that routine with a hectic schedule! I try to eat healthily and drink lots of water – it’s so easy to want quick fast food when you’re on the go all the time. I use exercise as a way to unwind too – swimming, yoga, running, it definitely helps clear your head.
We couldn’t agree more Dakota, exercise is certainly a good way to unwind and de-stress and what better way to do it than in our activewear!
